Research report

Delivered by: The London Homes Coalition.

July 2024: The London Homes Coalition recently announced the official launch of the Building Skills for the Future report. This partnership of major housing associations, contractors, and specialist suppliers across London has united to tackle the pressing skills and labour force challenges within the social housing sector.

The UK social housing sector is a cornerstone of the national economy, investing billions each year to improve and maintain homes. London’s major housing associations build a quarter of all new affordable homes in the capital, and manage and invest in over 770,000 homes across the country.

However, our workforce is ageing and retiring, exacerbated by insufficient training opportunities and limited awareness of career opportunities in the sector.

We must act now to train the next generation of talent.

The building skills for the future report is the result of extensive collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and rigorous data analysis.

It provides a strategic direction for the sector to unite, collaborate, and take decisive action to build the skilled workforce we urgently need.

We welcome the new government’s commitment to promote workforce and training plans for the construction sector and hope this report provides a clear roadmap to work together to address this challenge.
